The Importance Of Lighting In Retail Design

Lighting is one of the major influences which adds to the overall aesthetic of the business, yet, most retail stores tend to overlook this feature. In the same respect that music, décor and colour can portray a business’ brand, so can lighting.

Why Is Lighting In Retail Design Important?

1: Enhances The Products
Products which have adequate lighting standout for a number of reasons. Firstly, it actually allows the potential customer to see the item. There is nothing more unappealing than struggling to see something that you actually want to buy!

Also, lighting does to products what makeup does to the face – it enhances the natural beauty by enriching colours and textures. Therefore, enhanced products draw the consumers one step closer into buying your product.

2: Allows For More A Pleasant Experience
Lighting has the ability to affect one’s mood. Cool white lights make areas seem more spacious. On the other hand, warmer colours evoke a sense of familiarity and intimacy. Overall, it has been found that an intermediate to warm white light will make shoppers feel safer and more comfortable, subsequently lengthening the time they spend in a store.

3: Attracts Customers
Dynamic lighting is a powerful tool to grab attention. It also immediately sets the tone for your store which in turn allows the customer to observe and make any necessary judgements about if that store is suited to them.

4: Are They Different Types Of Lighting?
One lighting could not convey the entire brand of a business effectively, therefore, there is indeed more than one lighting which can be used in a retail setting:

Ambient lighting refers to the store’s main lighting which is also responsible for setting the overall tone of the space.

Task lighting makes it easier for staff and customers alike to focus on necessary tasks which require utmost focus (and clear vision).

Accent lighting accentuates particular products in order to draw attention to that specific item.

Decorative lighting is just that – decorative. Therefore, its main task is to add beauty to the store.

A well-lit store does not refer to one source of lighting but rather, a well-lit store can encompass many different aspects of lighting. Blending different types of solutions (providing that it is necessary to your store), can prove to be very beneficial. Therefore, never underestimate the power of a well-lit retail space!
